LAW-8073 Free Speech in the Workplace
This one-credit course examines the boundaries of free speech in employment settings, exploring the legal protections, employer policies, and societal debates that shape workplace expression. Students will consider how recent controversies, from political speech to social media activity, have tested the balance between employee rights and organizational interests, with attention to high-profile disputes frequently covered in the news. The course is especially valuable for first-year law students, as it introduces core constitutional principles in the context of practical workplace disputes. This will be designed to encourage 1L's to consider how they would feel as an employee about the issues when first introduced, then shifting to the perspective of an advisor and advocate.
