LAW-8058 Pop Culture and the Law

Pop Culture and the Law invites students to explore the intersection of law and popular culture, examining how the two shape and challenge one another. From Taylor Swift’s legal battles and more, pop culture offers vivid, accessible, and engaging examples that illuminate the law’s power, limitations, and cultural meaning. By studying how law is portrayed, contested, and understood in music, film, television, and social media, students will critically examine the role of the law in shaping identity, public discourse, and social change. Along the way, students will refine their ability to analyze cases, interpret rhetoric, and communicate persuasively—skills essential for success across all areas of legal practice. Through case studies, interdisciplinary readings, and collaborative discussions, students will engage with substantive legal issues, analyzing legal controversies through a sociolegal framework to develop critical thinking and communication skills.
