LAW-8071 Difficult Conversations: How to Talk Productively when People Disagree

A lawyer’s work often requires engaging with people who are angry, upset, or disagree strongly. Lawyers are also called upon to facilitate discussions between people who are at odds. This course teaches skills that will help you meet these challenges. We will work with techniques for delivering bad news to clients, talking productively with people with whom you disagree, and facilitating group discussions of difficult topics. Teaching will rely heavily on roleplaying, discussion, and video analysis. (Note: Students will be asked to engage in conversations on controversial issues about which they disagree with other class members.)Required texts: Heen et al., Difficult Conversations, and Public Conversations Project, Fostering Dialogue Across Divides.
