LAW-8072 Internet Law and Policy: Age-Verification Statutes
This course is focused on age-verification statutes, some of which have been passed by some states and some foreign countries, others of which are under consideration. A general foundation of internet law and policy will be provided to give students a context in which to understand the recent legislation moves; reading, analyzing, and comparing the different legislative approaches and proposals; reading, analyzing, and comparing pleadings and amicus briefs from some of the cases challenging the laws (as well as some public statements and approaches from tech companies). Students will consider these statutes from a number of different perspectives: child safety, privacy, free speech, jurisdictional challenges, etc. The assessments would involve the undertaking of several practical activities: providing legal advice to a variety of different internet companies in the face of such laws (big social media companies, small nonprofits with a website presence, companies on the internet but without an internet focus, etc.), providing legal advice to individuals in the face of such laws (people of different ages in different states), and drafting alternative legislations or amending existing ones.
