Specialization in Educational Management and Leadership

The specialty in Educational Management and Leadership contributes to developing educational managers and leaders who demonstrate mastery in solving problems inherent to the contemporary professional environment at different levels of education. It is oriented towards the study of theoretical foundations, the use and promotion of scientific research, the integration of technology into practice, the application of the highest ethical principles of the profession and participation in practical experiences in different scenarios.

The Aguadilla, Arecibo, Metropolitan and San Germán campuses are authorized to offer this Program.

Program Mission

The development of educational management and leadership with emphasis on respect for the fundamental rights of the educational community, the diversity of teaching-learning levels and its application in a variety of social contexts.

Program Goals

  1. Develop leaders who act efficiently and effectively in educational organizations committed to the truth, appreciation of human rights, social justice, tolerance, and the encouragement of critical and creative thinking in an organizational environment framed in educational leadership.
  2. Prepare educational leaders with solid professional competencies to perform effectively in diverse and globalized educational settings; those who critically and creatively analyze the needs of the community, in order to make decisions that solve educational problems, with a high sense of social, professional, ethical and moral responsibility.
  3. Prepare empathetic and sensitive educational leaders, capable of managing the processes of research, creation and dissemination of knowledge, who promote and participate in the development of innovations, who effectively and efficiently address the most complex issues of management practice and that promote commitment to continuous learning and professional development.

Program objectives

  1. Promote management decision-making based on knowledge of the values, best practices and theories that frame the management and administration of educational organizations.
  2. Promote the application of theoretical knowledge regarding individual and organizational behavior in the management of educational organizations.
  3. Provide knowledge of ethical-legal concepts for their application in the management of educational organizations.
  4. Develop critical evaluation of current problems and trends that influence leadership, management and general principles of teaching supervision.
  5. Expose students to the planning of educational programs based on new theoretical developments around curriculum, evaluation and assessment, technology and other educational practices for a new globalized world.
  6. Promote the participation of the sectors that represent people with functional diversity in the school community and integrate them into the educational management of the organization based on the essential foundations of management and leadership theories.
  7. Support the integration of research as an essential resource for understanding the phenomena that develop daily in school environments.
  8. Promote the effective use of training and qualification strategies of all components of the school community for the benefit of the teaching and learning processes of students.

Competencies Profile of Graduates

This Program is designed to develop the competencies that will enable students to:

Knowledge

  1. Identify effective strategies that promote ethical and moral values in the healthy management of fiscal matters and resources in the educational setting.
  2. Know the development and evolution of theories and models that explain the impact of individual, interpersonal and group behavior in the context of the management of educational organizations.
  3. Apply the ethical-legal principles of educational management considering the norms and social changes, laws, rules, regulations and jurisprudence that affect the educational scenario.

Skills

  1. Design plans and strategies based on educational leadership (principalship) that promote the continuous improvement of the educational organization and that contribute to the professional development of teaching and non-teaching staff.
  2. Develop collaborative environments that contribute to the study of various curricular design and development models, and to the assessment process for their application in learning communities through the integration of information and communications technologies (ICTs).
  3. Implement educational environments that promote the inclusion and attention of functional diversity inherent to special education, in accordance with the principles, theories and administrative practices in which school management and leadership are framed.

Attitudes

  1. Recognize the ethical and moral values related to the use of ICT, the methods, and strategies to scientifically investigate the problems inherent to management and leadership in educational settings.
  2. Value the human and social capital of the educational organization as a fundamental element for achieving the institutional philosophy, vision, goals and educational objectives.

Admission Requirements

In addition to satisfying the admission requirements to master's programs at the Inter-American University of Puerto Rico, the candidate must meet the following requirement:

  1. Have a minimum academic index of 3.00 in the last 60 credits of academic work.

Note on Management Certification

Students interested in obtaining a certification in the management area of the Puerto Rico Department of Education must meet the current requirements of the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico. Those interested in obtaining a license from other jurisdictions must comply with the requirements corresponding to the location.
