PMMD 8113 Language of Medicine Year 1

Language of Medicine (LOM) is a comprehensive, integrated, and longitudinal module expanding two years, that will serve as the foundation of knowledge utilized during the pre-clinical and clerkship years. Normal and abnormal human development, normal function and dysfunction, gross, topographic, and microscopic anatomy, histology, and pathology will be presented. LOM Year 1 (Y1) will include the comprehensive study of the lower extremity, head and neck, thorax, abdomen, pelvis, perineum, and upper extremity and delivered concurrently with the other modules. Students learn topographic anatomy, embryology, cell biology, histology, pathology along with the clinical applications contextually in each of the relevant companion modules, namely: 1). Podiatric Medicine Surgery and Biomechanics, 2). Cardiovascular and Respiratory, 3). Renal

The first half of the LOM Y1 module will encompass a comprehensive and detailed anatomical presentation of the lower extremity. This 16-week section will explore the 1). Surface Anatomy of the Lower Extremity, 2). Prenatal Development of the Lower Extremity, 3). Osteology of the Thigh and Gluteal Region, 4). Joints of the Thigh and Gluteal Region, 5). Muscles of the Thigh and Gluteal Region, 6). Vascularization of the Thigh and Gluteal Region,7). Lymphatics of the Thigh and Gluteal Region, 8). Innervation of the Thigh and Gluteal Region, 9). Osteology of the Leg, 10). Joints of the Leg ,11). Muscles of the Leg, 12). Vascularization of the Leg, 13). Lymphatics of the Leg, 14.) Innervation of the Leg, 15.) Osteology of the Foot, 16). Joints of the Foot, 17). Muscles of the Foot, 18). Vascularization of the Foot, 19.) Lymphatics of the Foot, 20). Innervation of the Foot, 21). Cross Sections of the Lower Extremity, 22). Lumbosacral Plexus.

The second half of the LOM Y1 module will explore the normal and abnormal development, gross and microscopic anatomy, physiology, and histopathology of the cardiovascular, respiratory, and renal systems.

Professionalism and ethical considerations, evidence-based medicine, diversity and inclusion norms and values, communication skills, inter-professional teamwork and reflective behavior are also emphasized. LOM Y2 is taught through large group interactive sessions and small group meetings (PBL, Anatomy and Histology Labs), and clinical application demonstrations. Students are assessed on LOM contents at the end of each companion module, using clinical vignette-based, multiple-choice questions and objective structured practical lab exams.
