HGEN 8215 Current Topics in Human Genetics
This course covers important current research topics in the field of human genetics by examining recent publications of outstanding interest. The primary objective of the course is to help students develop the critical thinking skills required to become independent researchers and robust interpreters of scientific literature. Students will learn to question the validity of assumptions underlying scientific examinations and papers, how to deal with conflicting reports in the literature, how to reframe hypotheses in light of new findings, and how to integrate different strands of research and evidence into coherent scientific frameworks. This course requires the active participation of students who, together with faculty, explore challenging papers in a group-based discussion format. May be repeated when the topic varies.
