A study of the peoples and states in the regionfrom Mexico south to Costa Rica. The course willexamine the historical background, contemporarydomestic and foreign affairs, and culturalcharacteristics of this region. This area studyincludes geographical settings, social, political,and economic development and institutions,religious beliefs, artistic forms, and literaryexpression. Emphasis is on the social andpolitical problems that in the 20th century haveproduced violent revolutions in almost all ofthese countries.
