Overview
The Associate Degree in General Studies at Central Louisiana Technical Community
College is designed to provide a stand-alone 2-year General Studies degree. The purpose
of our general education degree plan is to provide a solid, cross-disciplinary foundation in
both knowledge and skills to prepare students to be more well-rounded individuals as they
navigate their communities, work environment and the society around them.
The Associate of General Studies (AGS) degree consists of 27 required credits in specific
general education courses:
- MATH 1100 or MATH 1300
- 6 credits in Natural Science
- 6 credits in Social Science
- 3 credits in Humanities
- 3 credits in Fine Arts
The remaining 33 degree credits are electives which should be selected with consideration
of your ultimate educational goal.
For those students just seeking CLTCCs 2-year AGS degree who do not intend to transfer,
the 33 elective credits may be selected from across most disciplines offered.
Completion of a 30-credit Certificate of General Studies (CGS) can provide a solid base of
core general education requirements for transfer to a 4-year institution. However, students
are more likely to succeed in most transfer Bachelor's programs if the Associate degree is
taken to completion prior to transfer. The CGS may provide an appropriate transfer point,
and students should consult with advisers on the potential benefits to pathways involving
CGS transfer points.
