Nursing, Master of Science - Specialization in Nursing Education

*Note: the curriculum for MSN - Nursing Education Specialization will go into effect with students commencing study on or after Term 2, 2021. 

The goal of the master’s program is to prepare skilled, competent nurses to serve as leaders and collaborative partners of the health care team, lead change to improve quality outcomes and safety, apply evidence-based practice recommendations to improve health in a global society, and continue to pursue excellence and professional growth. 

At the completion of the program the student will be able to:

  1. Integrate advanced theoretical, research-based knowledge from the sciences and humanities in teaching, management, and clinical nursing
  2. Implement organizational and systems leadership changes that will improve quality and safety outcomes of healthcare organizations
  3. Synthesize knowledge from the organizational sciences, humanities, and informatics to improve the safety, quality, and delivery of patient care in complex educational or health care systems
  4. Apply research findings and evidence-based practice recommendations to improve health in a global society
  5. Design health care management systems and/or education programs for patients, students, families, communities, and populations using evidence-based practice, informatics, and health care technologies
  6. Analyze the political, social, organizational, cultural, and economic systems that impact health policy and health care delivery
  7. Demonstrate the ability to communicate, collaborate, and consult with others as a team leader and role model in order to improve patient and population health outcomes
  8. Apply knowledge of epidemiology, genetics, culture, and evidence-based practice recommendations of health promotion, disease and injury prevention and management in order to improve individual, family, community, and population health in a global society
  9. Demonstrate responsibility for advancing excellence in practice, personal values, and own professional development
  10. Provide humanistic, collaborative care as a leader in an advanced nursing practice which addresses sociocultural, spiritual, ethnic, and gender diversity within an increasingly global, multicultural society

The Essentials of Master’s Education in Nursing (AACN, 2011) standards provide the foundation for the nursing graduate program. The AACN standards guide program development, implementation, and evaluation.

Required courses for Nursing, MS – Specialization in Nursing Education (8 core, 4 specialization) = 12 courses or 54 credit hours

The MSN in nursing education offers a combination of courses to prepare the graduate in advanced nursing practice roles essential to teach nursing in an increasingly complex and culturally diverse health care system. The courses provide foundational knowledge that meets the objectives of the essentials of master’s education as required by the American Association of Colleges of Nursing. The plan of study builds advanced professional nursing competencies and emphasizes the use of a variety of assessment, instructional, curricular development and evaluative strategies that facilitate learning in diverse student populations. By earning a Master’s Degree in Nursing Education, graduates are prepared to function in a variety of educational settings including schools of nursing, hospitals, long-term care facilities, governmental agencies, community health organizations, and corporations. health care facilities. Graduates are qualified to sit for the NLN National Nurse Educator Certification. They are also prepared to later transition directly into a post-masters advanced practice nursing specialty certificate, PhD in Nursing, or a DNP program.
