LPNU 2124 Advanced Pharmacology and IV Therapy
Drug classifications and their effect on the various body systems are presented. Specific drugs in each classification are emphasized according to therapeutic effects, side effects, and adverse effects. Routes of drug administration and variables that influence drug actions are covered to include dangerous drug interactions and nursing implications related to each drug. Education for clients, family, and others about their medications, effects of medications, and correct administration is discussed. Safety precautions which will aid in decreasing the incidence of errors in medication are stressed. Advanced medication calculations will be required to demonstrate knowledge of safe dosing parameters. The nursing process is utilized to assess the learning needs of the client and the effects of all pharmacological interventions. Students are also taught the role of the practical nurse in the initiation and maintenance of intravenous therapy infusions, to include parental nutrition and blood products within the practical nurse scope of practice and that meets the requirements of the LSBPNE. The legal ramifications and responsibilities, and the need to adhere to facility policy, as well as scope of practice are stressed. Students focus on anatomy and physiology specific to intravenous infusions and are taught and demonstrate the correct procedures for IV therapy to maintain client safety. This course includes a 30-hour supervised skills lab.
