ED 5690 EMERGENT LITERACY

Theories and research on language and literacy development will be examined in this course with an emphasis on the relationships of oral language, early reading and writing, developing phonemic awareness, and appropriate instruction and assessment for emerging literacy learners of varying abilities, including those with disabilities and English language learners. Special attention will be placed on locating areas of pupil strength in literacy acquisition, understanding the impact of culture, heritage, and socio-economic level, and on fostering positive home-school relationships. Students will learn about communicating assessment results to parents, caregivers, and school personnel. Fieldwork working with emergent literacy learners is required.
