MUS 346 Jazz Theory and Improvisation II

Three hours per week. Prerequisite: MUS-240. This course serves as a continuation of Jazz Theory and Improvisation I. It combines the elements of jazz theory and harmony with the building blocks of the improvised solo. Involves additional modal and chord scale relationships, an extensive approach to the major and minor ii-V-I progression, the blues form, blues chord substitutions, harmonic applications of the melodic minor scale, advanced melodic structures, sectional forms, jazz repertoire, and jazz solo analysis. This course will combine a lecture/practicum format with reading and written assignments.
