MUS 331WR 20th and 21st Century Music

Three hours per week. Prerequisite: MUS 338. Satisfies the writing-intensive and research-intensive requirements of the music department. Required for all Bachelor of Music majors. A study of Western music from Debussy to the present day. Overview: A study of 20th and 21st century music. The course will look at the causes of reactionary music that influenced a break from the past and traditional models of tonality. Major works of significant composers will be studied. Students will write tomes on composers, literature and aesthetics of the sub-strata of musical change(s) since Mahler and Strauss through David Lang, Julia Wolfe and Terry Riley.
