LAW-2814 Military Law
This survey course examines the constitutional, statutory, and regulatory frameworks governing U.S. military operations and the administration of the joint force. Topics include the domestic and international legal authorities that shape the President’s and Congress’s use of the U.S. military, the role of the Supreme Court in national security law, the legal parameters governing military operations abroad and within the United States, and the Uniform Code of Military Justice and military disciplinary law. Additional subjects may include the rules of engagement, targeted killing, detention operations, military commissions and war crimes prosecutions, the Geneva Conventions, and the legal implications of emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence and cyber operations. Students will study and apply these legal principles through historical and contemporary case studies, with particular attention to the evolution of military law from September 11, 2001, to the present.
