Program Description

The LPN/Paramedic Bridge ASN Option prepares Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs) and Licensed Paramedics (EMT-Ps) with one year of in-field experience to become safe practitioners in the delivery of health care as registered nurses. The curriculum provides a strong foundation in the practice of nursing and prepares students to function safely within the framework of the registered nurse role.

Throughout the program, students integrate classroom theory with clinical experiences that are related to the theory component. Nursing education incorporates effective therapeutic communication techniques, critical thinking and clinical reasoning skills, and the development of sound nursing judgment. Clinical experiences are selected to provide students with opportunities to develop clinical competence.

Program graduates receive an Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) degree. Graduates are eligible to apply to take the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN). Upon successful completion of the NCLEX-RN and licensure by the Georgia Board of Nursing, graduates are employable as registered nurses in a variety of health care settings.

All required prerequisite coursework and the HESI A2 examination must be completed and submitted before the applicant can be considered for program admission.

HESI A2 Information

The HESI A2 may be taken no more than twice per calendar year, and scores are valid for one year from the test date. It is strongly recommended that applicants take the HESI A2 on the SCTC campus to ensure the exam includes all required components. If the exam does not meet program requirements, the score will not be accepted, and the applicant will be deemed ineligible for admission.

Application and Transcript Requirements

Students are responsible for ensuring that all transcripts are received by the college and evaluated by the College Registrar by the application deadline.

Program applications received before the application period or after the application deadline will not be accepted or considered for admission.

Applications for spring admission are accepted October 1-31 each calendar year for the Griffin Campus, Fayette Center, Jasper Center, and Butts Center.

Applications for fall admission are accepted May 1-June 30 for the Butts Center and Jasper Center. Applicants should verify current application dates with the Allied Health Programs Office.

If a student is not accepted and wishes to apply for the next class, the student must submit a new LPN/Paramedic Bridge Program application and current HESI A2 scores during the next application period.

There is no waiting list for this program.

The College accepts credit from the College Board’s College-Level Examination Program (CLEP). A grade of TR is assigned for awarded CLEP credit. Quality points are not awarded for CLEP; therefore, courses with CLEP credit are not calculated into the GPA during the competitive admissions process.

Health and Clinical Clearance Requirements

Students are required to meet all immunization and health clearance requirements established by the College and its clinical facility partners. Compliance with these requirements is mandatory for participation in clinical experiences and is a condition of continued enrollment in the LPN/Paramedic Bridge ASN Option.

Required immunizations and documentation may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Measles, Mumps, and Rubella (MMR): Two documented doses of the MMR vaccine or positive serologic titers demonstrating immunity to measles, mumps, and rubella are required.
  • Varicella (Chickenpox): Two documented doses of the vaccine or a positive titer demonstrating immunity are required. A self-reported history of chickenpox is not acceptable documentation.
  • Hepatitis B: Completion of a two- or three-dose vaccine series, depending on the manufacturer, is required, along with a post-vaccination titer demonstrating immunity.
  • Tetanus, Diphtheria, and Pertussis (Tdap): Documentation of vaccination within the past ten years is required.
  • Influenza (Flu): Documentation of vaccination for the current influenza season is required annually. The influenza season begins in September.
  • COVID-19: Proof of COVID-19 vaccination and any applicable booster doses, if received, is required. Students who decline vaccination must complete a signed refusal affidavit in accordance with clinical facility requirements.
  • QuantiFERON-TB Gold: QuantiFERON-TB Gold is the preferred tuberculosis screening test and is valid for one year. No additional PPD testing is required if this test is submitted. Students may obtain this test in advance, if desired.
  • Titers: Serologic titers are required to demonstrate immunity when vaccination records are unavailable or when required by a clinical facility partner.

Progression Requirements

Grading standards for the Associate of Science in Nursing program are stringent. To progress to the next course of study, students must earn a minimum grade of “C” in every nursing course. Students must maintain a minimum GPA of 2.0 to remain in the program.

Candidate Selection

Admission to the LPN/Paramedic Bridge ASN Option is competitive and is based on a weighted selection formula that includes the following factors:

  • Cumulative GPA in required general education and prerequisite courses, with a minimum GPA of 2.5 required.
  • HESI A2 examination score, with a minimum score of 70 required to apply.
  • Program application date.

Meeting minimum admission requirements does not guarantee acceptance into the program. Application deadlines vary by cohort. Applicants are encouraged to consult with an Allied Health Advisor or the Allied Health Programs Office for current application dates and requirements.

Available seats are awarded in rank order, beginning with the highest-scoring applicants, until maximum enrollment is reached. In the event of a tie, the student’s application date will serve as the determining factor.

The application date is defined as the date the student’s major is officially listed as ASN in Banner.

All applicants will be notified of their acceptance or denial status within three to four weeks following the LPN/Paramedic Bridge Program application deadline. Official notifications will be sent exclusively to the student’s Southern Crescent Technical College email account.
