ART 1720 History of Comic Books/Graphic Novels

This elective course will cover the history of comic books/graphic novels as a recognized art form of the twentieth century. Beginning with the pre-historic seeds of sequential illustration and moving onto the American comic book of the 1930’s, the lectures, presentations and occasional documentaries will provide an overview of the decades following certain movements within the industry and medium. Periods such as the Golden and Silver Ages, Outsider, and Underground comics will be discussed, as well as mainstream offerings of contemporary Marvel, DC comics and Japanese Manga. NOT applicable to the General Education Art History requirement.
