ENG 2393 From Book to Film: Sherlock Holmes
Sherlock Holmes—Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s seminal master detective—first arrived on the scene of the crime in the 1887 novella, “A Study in Scarlet,” and has scarce been out of the public imagination since. Holmes and his faithful companion, Watson, have appeared in radio serials, comic books, films, and television series, as well as a host of post-Doyle literary endeavors. This course will survey a select few of Doyle’s earlier Holmesian texts (including “A Study in Scarlet”) before looking to more recent film adaptations for an understanding of how a very Victorian hero has endured the test of time…across genres, through cultures, and from book to film.
