MUS 5045 Trauma-Informed Music Therapy
Music therapists work with diverse clients in numerous settings. Given the prevalence of trauma in the US, it is an ethical imperative for clinicians to be trauma-informed. This course will provide a foundational understanding of trauma-informed care as a framework for music therapy practice that can be applied in any type of clinical setting. Topics covered will include the neurobiology of trauma, different types of traumas and their impacts on individuals and communities, differences between trauma-informed and trauma-specific practice, common risk and protective factors, theoretical and developmental frameworks, cultural humility within trauma-informed practice, and indications and contraindications for the integration of diverse therapeutic music experiences.
