SLP 5450 Dysphagia

(formerly SLP 545)

This course will present the anatomy and physiology of normal and disordered oral feeding and swallowing throughout the life-span. Emphasis will be on physical, cognitive and behavioral issues related to the etiology, diagnosis and treatment of dysphagia. Current research in the evaluation and treatment of oral feeding and swallowing disorders in a variety of professional settings will be discussed. Instrumental assessment including modified barium swallow studies and flexible endoscopic evaluation of swallowing will be introduced. Issues regarding the impact of feeding and swallowing disorders on quality of life will be discussed.
