Admission Policy for Petroleum Engineering

Admission to the Petroleum Engineering (Petro) Program is highly selective. In reviewing applications, the college considers the student’s academic curriculum and grades, a personal essay, and a letter of recommendation. While there are not strict cutoffs, competitive candidates typically present a strong high school curriculum with a grade point average above 3.30. Although ACT or SAT scores are not required, strong scores can positively influence admission decisions. Because the Petro program is math-intensive, applicants should have completed at least pre-calculus in high school, with a preference for those who have taken calculus. A student may be admitted to Marietta College, but not to the Petroleum Engineering Program

Students whose records do not meet the above criteria may be admitted to the program; however, on-time completion of the curriculum is dependent on completing Calculus I during the first year of college. Despite meeting the entrance requirements above, a score on the Marietta College math placement test indicating the student is underprepared for MATH 121 Pre-Calculus means that a student likely will need to make full use of campus resources to be prepared to complete successfully Calculus I prior to the sophomore year and to remain on the normal curricular path.

Students transferring to Marietta College or transferring into the program from another academic program must have a minimum college grade point average of 3.00 and have successfully taken college calculus. Enrollment in the program is limited, and the number of accepted transfers is dependent upon the number of spaces available at the appropriate class level.
