The Political Science program introduces students to political phenomena through coursework in the major sub-fields of the discipline, experiential learning opportunities, and co-curricular activities. A major in Political Science prepares students for careers in government, politics, or private-sector roles related to public affairs, as well as for admission to professional or graduate school. The program also aims to prepare students for informed and active democratic citizenship.

Students with specific interests within Political Science are encouraged to group their courses and activities accordingly, in consultation with their faculty advisor. For example, students interested in international studies and careers in diplomacy should focus their electives in the international relations sub-field, consider studying abroad and/or participating in American University’s Washington Semester program (diplomacy track), apply for internships with the State Department or similar organizations, and join the Model United Nations club.

Pre-law students should choose electives that support LSAT preparation, pursue internships in legal settings, participate in Moot Court, and consult with the Pre-Law advisor, Dr. Schaefer. Students interested in public policy careers should concentrate their electives in the policy sub-field, consider attending the Washington Semester program in policy studies, and seek internships at organizations such as the Urban Institute or the Heritage Foundation.
