CLB-515 MOLECULAR LABORATORY DIAGNOSTICS I

The course begins by examining basic concepts of molecular science such as the composition of nucleic acids and basic molecular theory. After a strong molecular science foundation has been established, biochemical reagents frequently utilized in the molecular laboratory will be studied with emphasis on polymerases enzymes, endo- and exo-nucleases, transcriptases, and nucleases. In addition, assay development and design for molecular science reagents will be discussed. The course concludes with the study of many molecular techniques for nucleic acid isolation, separation, detection, and amplification. Among the techniques are manual and automated nucleic acid isolation, electrophoresis, blotting, and probing procedures, and the different PCR variations, etc. Prerequisites: BIO 110 (Biological foundations) or equivalent, BIO 303 (Genetics) OR CLB 427 (Biochemistry)
