Program Description

The program is designed to provide students with the foundations of a degree in social work, enabling them to pursue careers in social service settings. Additionally, students who obtain this degree at TMCC will develop a working understanding of the unique issues faced by the people of or affiliated with the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa as well as other tribes located regionally and across the country. Students who complete the AA in Social Work will also meet academic requirements for enrollment in a Bachelor’s of Social Work (BSW) degree program. For BSW programs, a combined GPA of 2.50 for Social Work courses (250, 255 & 257) in addition to an overall GPA of 2.00 or better is a minimum requirement.  Students wishing to pursue a BSW will need to complete an application to the BSW program, agree to abide by the NASW Code of Ethics, and complete a full criminal (local, state and national) background check.  BSW applicants must also provide a personal statement to the BSW program.

Mission:

Institutional Mission Statement

Turtle Mountain Community College is committed to functioning as an autonomous Indian controlled college on the Turtle Mountain Chippewa Reservation focusing on general studies, undergraduate education, Career & Technical Education, scholarly research, and continuous improvement of student learning. By creating an academic environment in which the cultural and social heritage of the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa is brought to bear throughout the curriculum, the college establishes an administration, staff, faculty, and student body exerting leadership in the community and providing service to it.

Career Outlook

Social Workers typically need a bachelor’s or master’s degree in social work from a program accredited by the Council on Social Work Education; most states also require a license to practice social work.  Overall employment of social workers is projected to grow 12 percent from 2020 to 2030, faster than the average for all occupations.  The median annual wage for social workers was $50,390 in May 2021 (Bureau of Labor Statistics, U.S. Department of Labor, Occupational Outlook Handbook, Social Workers, at https://www.bls.gov/ooh/community-and-social-service/social-workers.htm (visited August 05, 2022)).
