ISOM-240 Data Privacy and Digital Forensics
This course introduces the fundamental concepts of data privacy and digital forensics in modern information systems. Students examine how organizations collect, use, and protect data, along with legal, ethical, and managerial challenges across diverse social, cultural, and global contexts. Topics include privacy principles, regulatory frameworks such as the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and United States laws like the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), emerging technologies, and privacy-enhancing solutions. The course also covers digital forensics, focusing on how digital evidence is identified, preserved, and analyzed in cybersecurity investigations, including data breaches, insider threats, and ransomware incidents. Through hands-on activities, case analysis, and applied assignments, students develop skills to assess privacy risks, understand global perspectives on data governance, investigate digital incidents, and design effective, ethically informed data protection strategies.
