Criminology
The Criminology Program at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College emphasizes a broad understanding of the dynamics of crime and delinquency. The criminological enterprise and its adjutant systems are explored through the lens of social science. Students majoring or minoring will complete 24 credit hours in the criminology core. Majors will take another 18 hours to be completed in the Department of Social and Behavioral Sciences. The hours completed in the department area can be tailored to fit the student’s particular area of interest. These courses can include electives from the criminology pool. All deviations must be approved by the student’s academic advisor. Students majoring in criminology are encouraged to also major in a second social science area to gain a broader understanding of the content. MA 253 Statistics is the required Woods Core math course.
Criminology Program Learning Outcomes:
1. Demonstrate a working knowledge of the justice system and the roles and responsibilities of various positions in the field within the framework of social justice.
2. Apply ethical decision making to situations within the field utilizing the principles of love, mercy, and justice.
3. Utilize an in-depth knowledge of criminology to identify and resole issues in the field with regard to spirituality, sustainability, social justice, and gender equality.
4. Analyze, evaluate, develop, and support opinions on the ongoing and changing impact and role of the justice system.
5. Identify, assess, and apply practices to address the impact of major social issues related to the administration of justice.
