HIS 2340 Regionalism in Europe and Asia
(also POL 2340)
A theoretical and functional understanding of regionalization (economic integration within a region) and regionalism (the creation of institutions to promote such integration) using the European and Asian models as examples in contrast. The course will focus on the historical and institutional development of the European Union (EU), the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN) and the Asian Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC). Readings and discussions explore why states sacrifice sovereignty to create regional institutions to coordinate economic, financial and in some cases security policies. This approach offers students views of how and why regionalism differs from region to region due to each national, social, historical, political and ideological experience.
