Chair: Matt Menzel (mmm002@marietta.edu)

The primary mission of the department is to help students excel in the areas of mathematical reasoning, computational thinking, and information management; a key component of this is the development of critical thinking and problem-solving skills. We serve a large portion of the student body through our Quantitative Reasoning courses as part of the college’s General Education curriculum. We also provide numerous service courses to departments across campus including those in the natural sciences, the social sciences, and the pre-professional disciplines.

The major and minor programs offered by our department embody our department’s mission, and we aim to prepare our major and minor students for careers and graduate study in mathematics, computer science, information management, and related fields.

Placement

Students wishing to take MATH 125 (Calculus I) must achieve a set level of competency on an online Pre-Calculus proficiency exam administered by the department, and they must take Math 121 (Pre-Calculus) if their score on this exam is below the passing level. Students not intending to take a Calculus course should take the department’s online Basic Algebra placement exam. Those with low Basic Algebra test, ACT or SAT scores who are taking other 100-level mathematics courses should make use of tutoring, faculty office hours, and other support services to compensate for mathematical deficiencies.
