From the President
Congratulations on your decision to pursue your undergraduate education and to do so at Marietta College! We are glad that you have chosen to join our community of scholars.
I hope that you find your studies to be fulfilling both personally and professionally. Advancing your thinking and deepening your perspective through study in our majors and general education curriculum will help to build your confidence and competence.
A college’s distinct value rests upon and is measured by its ability to fulfill its Mission. Since its founding in 1835 the Marietta has been recognized as one of the outstanding educational institutions in the United States. We retain the original goal of educating students in “the various branches of useful knowledge.” Today that means that we educate broadly with a contemporary eye on preparation for a wide variety of careers. As you review Marietta’s Seven Core Values that are listed on the next page it will become clear that we espouse both depth and breadth of learning that encourages productive engagement with community with the aim to advance society. These goals are aspirational, and you will see them evidenced in the learning you will experience here.
In choosing Marietta you also have chosen to join a community that is committed to your learning and personal growth. Marietta’s outstanding faculty and professional staff are here to support and encourage you. We dedicate our efforts to your success.
Now that you have made the important decision to continue your education, I encourage you to embrace every possible opportunity to explore the new ideas that you will encounter. The ability to incorporate and synthesize these ideas into new learning is unique to you – no one can see the world as you can, through the filter of your perspective that is informed by your past learnings and experience. The new knowledge that you will share with us will change our world.
Allow yourself to be inspired. Endeavor to inspire others.
I wish you success in your studies and look forward to celebrating your learning milestones.
