HIST 316 The American West

This course is an exploration in the major themes and historiographical approaches to the study of the American West. The focus will be on the vibrant interactions of peoples, nations, and the empires across the boundaries of the United States, Canada, and Mexico. The American West was a place where peoples of different cultural heritages interacted, traded, and became both friends and enemies. The West also shaped centers of national power - cities, governments, and policy - and defined views on expansion, sovereignty, immigration, labor race, and ethnicity. The course will be driven by themes in violence and accommodation, along with gender, conflict, identity, and ideology.
