ENGL 305 Survey of Literary Theory

This course provides an introduction to the mostimportant schools of literary interpretation. Itwill examine the primary schools of thought aswell as the debates that surround them. Forexample, the New Critics claim an interpretationshould stand regardless of the author-s timeperiod, while New Historicists argue that allreaders should be historians of the life andtimes of their favorite authors. Theinterpretation of literature has also taken onpolitical importance with the development ofFeminist Theory, LGBT Theory, PostcolonialTheory, and/or Cultural Studies. This courseexplores these schools and more while honing thestudent's skills of literary interpretationthrough analysis, critical writing, and thedevelopment of a lexicon related to these skills.
