NUR 132 Medical-Surgical Nursing I

This course defines the role of the practical nurse as a provider of care and member within the discipline of nursing. Emphasis is placed on the systematic attainment of theoretical knowledge using the nursing process and critical thinking skills needed for beginning medical-surgical clinical practice. Concepts of promotion, maintenance, and restoration of health in caring for adults with fluid, electrolyte, acid-base analysis; pain; cancer; surgical; endocrine; cardiovascular; respiratory; and immune disorders.

Course Description

This course defines the role of the practical nurse as a provider of care and member within the discipline of nursing. Emphasis is placed on the systematic attainment of theoretical knowledge using the nursing process and critical thinking skills needed for beginning medical-surgical clinical practice. Concepts of promotion, maintenance, and restoration of health in caring for adults with fluid, electrolyte, acid-base analysis; pain; cancer; surgical; endocrine; cardiovascular; respiratory; and immune disorders.

Measurable Performance Objectives (MPOs)

Upon completion of this course, the student will:

  1. Analyze sound nursing judgment to provide clinically competent nursing care by incorporating clinical reasoning skills and theoretical knowledge in patients with: fluid, electrolyte, acid-base analysis; pain; cancer; surgical; endocrine; cardiovascular; respiratory; and immune disorders.

    1. Apply comprehension of medical diagnoses, treatment, and nursing care of clients in healthcare settings.

    2. Use physical assessment techniques and health data to evaluate the client on an ongoing basis.

    3. Analyze nutritional and pharmacological requirements for clients with various medical-surgical disorders.

    4. Apply theoretical knowledge and principles of clinical reasoning when providing nursing care for clients in healthcare settings.

    5. Select nursing interventions to meet client goals and provide optimal outcomes.

    6. Solve mathematical calculations for nursing clinical practice.

 

  1. Demonstrate caring behaviors while recognizing the uniqueness of the individual.

    1. Demonstrate nursing interventions in the promotion, maintenance, and restoration of health for diverse clients.

    2. Use the principles of therapeutic communication with clients and families incorporating diversity into their plan of care.

    3. Discuss the impact of hospitalization on clients and families.

 

  1. Practice appropriate communication techniques while functioning as a member of the healthcare team.

    1. Employ effective communication techniques while collaborating with healthcare team members.

    2. Determine knowledge deficits of clients and families in relation to the promotion, maintenance, and restoration of health.

    3. Modify individualized client and family teaching/learning into the nursing plan of care.

    4. Use appropriate medical terminology when documenting assessment and care.

 

  1. Administer nursing care incorporating the principles of leadership and advocacy.

    1. Employ the role of the nurse in conjunction with other members of the multidisciplinary team in the promotion of health for clients and families as caregiver, teacher, collaborator, advocate, and coordinator.

    2. Demonstrate cooperation when working with physicians, nurses, staff, and fellow students in healthcare settings.

    3. Select a plan that involves the clients and families in decision-making.

The grade will be determined using the Delaware Tech grading system:

90-100 = A
80-89 = B
70-79 = C
0-69 = F
