Course Description
This course provides an introduction to tools, drawings, and mechanical drive components found in industrial and manufacturing environments. Students become familiar with the installation, operation, maintenance, and repair of mechanical drive systems.

Measurable Performance Objectives (MPOs)
Upon completion of this course, the student will:
- Demonstrate safety requirements associated with mechanical systems.
- Understand the importance of personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Demonstrate the proper procedure for lifting.
- Use lockout and/or tagout when needed.
- List several general electrical safety practices.
- Discuss the proper use of safety belts, scaffolds, and ladders.
- Identify all the organizations that govern the safety of hazardous material.
- List the different classes of fires and the proper method of extinguishing a fire.
- Choose basic tools and fasteners associated with mechanical systems.
- Discuss the importance of inspecting a hand tool.
- Demonstrate the proper use of various types of hand tools.
- Discuss the most common types of power tools.
- Discuss the many safety issues when working with electricity and power tools in general.
- List the proper and improper use of each power tool that is mentioned.
- Discuss the importance of inspecting all power tools before and after their use.
- Define the terms that are associated with threads.
- Discuss the class of a thread.
- Discuss and demonstrate the proper tapping procedures and the proper method of using a cutting die.
- List several types of fasteners.
- Identify the grade of a fastener.
- Use tables to determine the tightening torque of a bolt.
- Interpret industrial blueprints and drawings, and associate them with operating equipment.
- Explain and interpret dimensional drawings.
- Explain and interpret schematics.
- Use the border system to locate key parts or components in the drawing.
- Explain and interpret an exploded view drawing.
- Discuss each of the four basic drawings used to convey information in the electrical field: the single-line drawing, the pictorial diagram, the schematic diagram, and the ladder diagram.
- Identify mechanical assemblies, and explain the purpose, operating characteristics, maintenance, and repair of common mechanical systems.
- Perform a set-up, basic maintenance functions, and perform repair activities on the following types of equipment in a laboratory environment:
- Mechanical power transmission
- Bearings
- Coupled shafts
- Lubrication
- Seals and packing
- Pumps and compressors
- Piping systems
