DNTA 2820 Dental Infection Control

This course covers the essential elements and implementation of infection control and occupational safety in a dental office. The student is introduced to the management of hazardous and infectious waste, sterilization equipment procedures, treatment room disinfection, aseptic technique, and dental unit water line management. Dental disease transmission and infection prevention are explored. (3 lect.)

Outcomes

In order to successfully complete this course, the student will:

1. Examine the basic concepts of microbiology and pathology in relation to disease transmission and infection prevention in a dental office.

2. Review CDC, OSHA, and state regulations governing health and safety in a dental setting.

3. Discuss quality assurance in a dental office, including maintenance and annual tests needed.

4. Use established infection control procedures before, during, and after a dental procedure.

5. Demonstrate instrument processing, packaging, and sterilizing techniques.

6. Assess the benefits of patient and care giver positioning to promote health and safety in a dental office.
