Social Justice, Minor
Program Overview
A Minor in Social Justice provides the students the framework to think critically about structural inequalities, oppression and injustices, in order to develop strategies for creating and sustaining an equitable and just society. It is the goal of social justice to provide social change towards a peaceful, diverse and inclusive society.
The Social Justice Minor supports the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley’s mission to transform the Rio Grande Valley, the Americas, and the world through an innovative and accessible educational environment that promotes student success, research, creative works, health and well-being, community engagement, and sustainable development; and the College of Liberal Arts commitment to theoretical and engaged/applied scholarship that serves our professions and our communities, with emphasis on critical thinking, research mentoring, experiential and service-learning to prepare bilingual, biliterate and bicultural graduates to serve our communities, nation and world; and 3) the mission of the Criminal Justice Department to help students develop the knowledge and analytical abilities to become agents of change in a democratic society, with an emphasis on social justice and equality.
The Social Justice minor is available to all students.
Minor Requirements - 18 hours
Required Courses - 9 hours
Criminal justice majors must replace the course CRIJ 3310 with a social justice advanced elective course options to fulfill the minor.
