Policy: The College of Nursing and Sciences (CONHS) and its Office of Field Experience (OFE) are committed to supporting its students' field experiences. Field experiences, which encompass external experiences or externships, are mandatory components for specific CONHS programs. The term "field experience" is inclusive of clinical, practicum, or practice immersion experiences.
High level responsibilities of OFE are as follows:

  • Assist students in understanding the nature of field experience preparation and expectations, and introducing handbooks, guidelines, and tools.
  • Guide students through the successful submission of documents and set milestone deadlines to facilitate continuous enrollment.
  • Provide ongoing support and counseling to students regarding health and safety, placement, or technical related questions or concerns.
  • Confirm students' field experience placement and compliance are in accordance with university, regulatory, and accreditation health and safety and placement standards, as well as contractual obligations with affiliates/field experience sites.
  • Facilitate the CONHS approval of sites and preceptors, ensuring alignment with CONHS standards.
  • Issue OFE approvals or initiate pause/revocations of OFE approval, if necessary.
  • Guide students through the field experience site application process, if required.
  • Engage in continuous communication with sites and preceptors, oversee development, onboarding, evaluations, and documentation renewals.
  • Develop and maintain appropriate databases for field experience reporting and management for internal and external reporting.
  • Maintain regular communication with CONHS leadership and field experience instructors, escalating matters as necessary.
  • The OFE follows the policies outlined in the Clinical, Practicum or Practice Immersion Handbooks and the university catalog.

Purpose: The purpose of this policy is to establish guidelines for managing clinical field experience preparation and ongoing support, ensuring alignment with university, regulatory, and accreditation health and safety and placement standards, as well as contractual obligations with affiliates/field experience sites.

Procedure: Detailed responsibilities are outlined in the respective CONHS OFE Handbooks.

Scope: The policy applies to all CONHS students, faculty and administrators who take, oversee or support clinical, practicum or practice immersion field experiences or courses.
