This course highlights developments in political and legal concepts since the Protestant Reformation. It assesses how post-1525 thinkers and polities in Western Civilization (Europe, North America, and northern and eastern Africa) developed and reformed novel political ideologies to address notions of individuals’ rights and responsibilities before the law and the state, to the role of education in ensuring a country’s effective operation, to organized religion’s role in governance and jurisprudence, and to the changing balance between personal autonomy and political integration.
