SOCI 350 Drugs: Marijuana, Cocaine, Heroin
In this advanced course, students will adopt a macro-level sociological imagination towards drugs in America. Specifically, as a class we will examine the histories of marijuana, cocaine, and heroin in the United States, as well as investigate the current ramifications of policies that are in place to deter citizens from using such drugs. We will explore the social construction of drug scares, the intersection of race and drugs, and the underground economy associated with the drug trade nationally and internationally, among other topics. Students will also investigate a drug of their choice and study its history and relationship with American culture, politics, and social life using the guidelines and paradigms employed in this course.
