Course Description

This seminar and clinic lab course focuses on the needs and treatment of the mentally, physically, and medically compromised patient. The course methods include a variety of lectures, discussions, films, laboratory exercises, field trips, and clinical sessions.

Measurable Performance Objectives (MPOs)

Upon completion of this course, the student will:

Analyze the systemic, clinical, and dental manifestations of various diseases and conditions.
1. Identify a person with a disability.
2. Differentiate among systemic manifestations, clinical features, and dental implications for a person with a disability.
3. Discuss barriers affecting the person with a disability, and explain how the barriers relate to daily life.
Formulate the treatment and management modifications needed for patients with a complex medical history.
1. Prepare individualized treatment plans for the patient with a disability including any necessary treatment modifications.
2. Explain the disorder and/or disease process for the dental patient with a disability.
3. Discuss the patient management concerns and any necessary treatment modifications for the dental patient with a disability.
Deliver dental hygiene treatment to mentally, physically, and medically compromised patients.
1. Modify and use special aids that may be needed to facilitate the management of a person with a disability in the dental setting.
2. Demonstrate proper transfer of the patient with a disability in the clinical setting.
3. Modify oral physiotherapy aids and perform individualized oral physiotherapy as needed for the person with a disability.
4. Demonstrate preventive dental care for the patient with a disability.

Evaluation Criteria/Policies

The grade will be determined using the Delaware Tech grading system:

90-100	=	A
80-89	=	B
70-79	=	C
0-69	=	F
