ENG 440 Chaucer
This course provides an in-depth study of the life, works, and cultural context of Geoffrey Chaucer. Through a combination of close reading and critical analysis, students will gain a thorough understanding of Chaucer's poetry and prose, as well as the historical and cultural context in which they were produced. Students also will engage with a range of scholarly articles, critical essays, and theoretical frameworks in order to deepen their understanding of Chaucer's work, his place in literary history, and his use of genre, narrative structure, and language to address issues such as gender, class, race, and power. Texts will be read primarily in Middle English.
Prerequisite
ENG 200-level literature course or permission of the English faculty.
