In conjunction with the McLaughlin Social Justice Institute of Lasallian Practice (MSJI) this course will acquaint students with the modern history and current application of Catholic Social Teaching in the context of an apostolic spirituality. Integrating sociology, psychology, history, and spirituality with Catholic Social Teaching concepts, students will focus on themes of economics and work, life and death, racism and poverty, war and peace, and immigration issues. Attention will be given to the Roman Catholic perspective as expressed in Scripture, Church documents and papal teachings, as well as the works of various Catholic theologians. In addition to three formal hours of class each day, students will spend an additional three hours participating in a field experience or site visit that corresponds with the day’s classroom topic.
