General Studies (24.0102)

Overview

The Certificate of General Studies (CGS)*is designed to provide students with a broad foundation of fundamental academic skills, primarily for personal growth or as preparation for further collegiate study. The CGS framework allows students an opportunity to tailor their courses to meet admission or pre-requisite requirements of a transfer institution. The 30-hour curriculum consists of eight general education courses (24 SCH) and two elective courses.

 

Student Learning Outcomes

  1. Produce clear, effective, and grammatically and mechanically correct written works; use reliable sources to evaluate, analyze, synthesize information, and make informed judgments.
  2. Understand and utilize formulas, equation solving techniques, and quantitative problem-solving strategies.
  3. Reflect on human interaction, experience, and culture in various works of human intellect and imagination.
  4. Demonstrate a general understanding of fundamental theories of the natural world; demonstrate a broad understanding of and apply the scientific method.
  5. Identify, analyze, interpret real-world phenomena, utilize critical thinking to make logical conclusions, and demonstrate problem-solving skills that influence human behavior and interaction.

* The Certificate of General Studies (CGS) is not a program that is accredited by the Council on Occupational Education, nor does it qualify students to receive Title IV financial aid.  It is considered an avocational award to recognize student achievement.
