REHS 7325 Introduction to Bilingual Counseling and the Hispanic Culture

This course will augment students’ professional Spanish vocabulary through an introduction to Spanish therapeutic concepts, interventions, and terminology used in the counseling profession. The course is designed to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of Bilingual counseling and the Hispanic culture. Roles, barriers to, and approaches for engaging in culturally competent counseling are discussed throughout the course, and students can explore their cultural identification and heritage. Emphasis is placed on dynamic multidimensional perspectives, strengths-based approaches, and ethical considerations. Key topics include cultural differences, similarities, racial diversity, sociopolitical factors, and the impacts of immigration.
