Admission Process
Students not meeting the minimum 22 Math ACT sub score or SAT equivalent will enter as pre-Zoo Sciences major. To transition into the full Zoo Sciences and Applied Conservation major students must:
- Main a cumulative GPA of 2.5 in science and math
- Complete a minimum of 50 hours/semester of animal husbandry with the WLU Zoo Sciences animal collection for a minimum total of 200 hours by the end of the fourth semester of study*
Students who do not successfully complete the requirements the Pre-Zoo Sciences requirement will be placed on probation for the following semester. Students on probation must earn a 2.5 GPA in science and math for the probation semester to be removed from probation and maintain a 2.5 GPA or better in science and math in subsequent semesters to not return to probation. Additionally, students on probation must accumulate animal husbandry hours with the WLU Zoo Science Animal Collection equivalent to 50 hours/semester cumulative. For example, if a student on probation had only completed 10 hours of husbandry, they would be required to complete 50 hours for the probation semester AND complete an additional 40 hours to account for the hours not completed in the previous semester. If students do not meet the requirements by the end of the probation semester, they will be dismissed from the major.
At the end of the fourth semester of study in Pre-Zoo Sciences if the requirements have been successfully met, students will declare a track (Zoo Sciences and Applied Conservations) and transition into the full major, Zoo Sciences and Applied Conservation. After this time, a student will be placed on probation if the science and math cumulative GPA drops below 2.5. Students on probation must earn a minimum 2.5 GPA in science and math courses during the probation semester to return to good standing. Students must have a 2.5 cumulative GPA in the major to graduate.
*Students will not be permitted to complete BIO 454 Zoo Internship credits until they have completed the required minimum 200 hours of animal husbandry with the WLU Zoo Sciences Animal Collection.
