PMIM 9110 Internal Medicine / Family Medicine Clerkship
Each podiatric medical student will participate in a mandatory four-week clerkship in either Internal Medicine or Family Medicine. Both clinical rotations provide the podiatric medical student the opportunity to perform medical histories and physical examinations under the supervision of an attending physician and formulate diagnostic and therapeutic plans for medical patients. The student will further develop their communication skills with patients and their families, physicians, colleagues, and other health professionals.
The Internal Medicine clerkship rotation affords the students the opportunity to follow patients in the outpatient and/or hospital setting. Students will be involved in hospital-related rounds and activities thorough their inpatient experience. The student will gain experience in caring for medical patients including prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of adult diseases.
Clerkship in Family Medicine will be conducted in out-patient clinics. They will be exposed to the fundamental concepts of comprehensive, continuous, cost-effective, and family centered primary care. Students will gain clinical skills focused on ambulatory problems involving patients of all ages, genders, and a variety of diseases. They are expected to gain basic knowledge in the diagnosis and management of common family health issues and problems across the lifespan, health promotion and disease prevention.
