Department of Civil Engineering
The UTRGV Civil Engineering Undergraduate Program affords students opportunities to meet and interact with practicing engineers, private firms and government agencies; to participate in professional engineering organizations and in research and therefore prepares them well for entry-level engineering jobs and/or for admission into either the UTRGV Master of Science in Civil Engineering, or other competitive graduate programs.
The program emphasizes five areas of study: water resources/environmental, structures, geotechnical, transportation, and construction engineering and culminates with the award of a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering (BSCE) degree, accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET).
The BSCE requires 129 credits of coursework including foundational courses in mathematics, calculus-based chemistry, physics and engineering in the first two years, followed by upper level civil engineering core courses (64 credits) in both broad and specialized civil engineering topics like water resources engineering, reinforced concrete design, foundation design, and construction planning. Two required technical elective courses (chosen by the student from any of the areas of emphasis) are meant to provide deeper learning, research and/or professional-led work experiences. The capstone, six-credit CE Senior course sequence gives students the opportunity to work on real engineering projects and prepares them well for their professional careers.
