Policy: Program review is a cyclical process for evaluating and continuously enhancing the quality and currency of programs. The review is conducted through a combination of self-evaluation and peer-evaluation by reviewers external to the program and, usually, also external to the organization. It is a comprehensive analysis of program quality and viability, analyzing a wide variety of data about the program. The results of the program review process are then used to inform follow-up planning and budgeting processes at various levels in the institution—program, college, university. Program reviews occur on a five-year cycle.
Purpose: The foundational principle of the program review processes is to provide faculty with the opportunity, time, and resources for thoughtful reflection and conversation about the quality and currency of their programs with the goal of continual improvement. As such, the primary utility of program review is to provide a structure to foster continuous program improvement that is aligned with departmental, college, and institutional goals.
Procedures: The program review process is described in the Program Review Manual (see Document linked below). Changes to the Program Review Manual are approved by the Assessment Committee prior to moving through the normal adjudication process (i.e., Faculty Senate, University Council, President’s Council).
Scope: Program review applies to all degree programs at USU.
