SF-1180 Nasty Women in American Literature

This course introduces students to the voices of "nasty women," as they present themselves in American Literature from the 19th century to the present day. We read and study feminist writers and thinkers, as both authors and characters, who are outspoken, unconventional, independent, and rebellious. We explore the benefits and the costs of being an outspoken female voice in a patriarchal society and we interrogate ongoing oppressive systems, particularly in terms of how they impact intersectional female identities. Regular assignments on the readings, in a variety of forms, provide the basis for individualized instruction in thoughtful and careful reading, literary analysis, and clear and correct speaking.
