Dual Master of Engineering-MBA degree in Mechanical Engineering

The dual Master of Engineering-MBA in Mechanical Engineering degree is designed for students that seek to have a deep technical knowledge in mechanical engineering as well as strong management skills and qualifications. The students will earn two separate master’s degrees in succession in this dual degree program. The MBA degree will be completed first; the engineering degree is considered the primary degree and will be finished last.

 

This dual program offers an exceptional combination of management skills with deep and practical knowledge of the technical aspects of mechanical engineering. The MBA program is particularly suited for engineers, as it incorporates a unique blend of courses on management skills, technology and analytics skills, and human skills.

Program Objectives

 

The program prepares students to:

  • become managers/leaders in engineering firms or engineering departments of any firm.

  • establish new ventures and startups with expertise in engineering and the skills to start a business.

  • pursue further studies:  Based on their disciplinary backgrounds, students with this degree may decide to pursue a Ph.D. degree in Mechanical Engineering, or Business Administration, and join academia as a researcher and/or faculty member (e.g., Ph.D. in Sustainable Development, Sustainability Science, or Sustainability Management with focus on finance, marketing, or operations management). Other requirements may be necessary for Ph.D. application. 

Program Outcomes

By the time of graduation, students will be able to:

  • acquire in-depth technical and managerial skills to be able to be effective leaders in technology companies in their field of study.

  • develop basic skills of management as well as gain knowledge of analytical methods for approaching organization problems.

  • integrate managerial and technical aspects of mechanical engineering.

  • demonstrate fluency in the current body of knowledge in mechanical engineering and apply that knowledge toward optimal decision-making processes in their respective field of practice.

  • exhibit proper use of integrative thinking in order to holistically analyze the relationship between human activity and the natural, social, and economic environments.

  • apply both qualitative and quantitative analytical skills in solving problems in the context of their professional interests and expertise.

  • efficiently communicate complex issues to a varied audience.

  • demonstrate a high level of professionalism and proper understanding of ethical boundaries in all undertakings.

Degree Requirements

The program is a 57-credit degree program. Students are required to complete:

  • seven courses (21 credits) from the M.S. in Mechanical Engineering degree program, including:

    • 2 Mechanical Engineering core courses (6 credits)

    • 4 Mechanical Engineering concentration courses from one of the Mechanical Engineering concentrations (12 credits)

    • 1 Mechanical Engineering elective (3 credits)

  • an additional 12 courses (36 credits) from the MBA degree program
