Required Academic Criteria

    • Secondary schools must be accredited by an agency included on the TCSG approved accreditation agency list.
    • Applicants with diplomas from secondary schools located outside the United States must have their transcripts evaluated for equivalency by an approved outside evaluation organization.

  2. Submission of an official transcript reflecting the student has passed an examination the state recognizes as the equivalent of a high school diploma (e.g. GED).
  3. The only exception to requirements 1 or 2 is for those students seeking enrollment into an approved basic workforce certificate that does not require a high school diploma or GED for admission as listed on the attachment 6.2.1p.a2.
  4. Submission of an official transcript from each of one or more previously attended postsecondary institutions (accredited by an accepted accrediting agency) reflecting the successful completion (C or better) of a minimum of 30 semester or 45 quarter credit hours of coursework at the degree level.
  5. Applicants who were home schooled in the state of Georgia and did not attend a recognized accredited program must submit:

Assessment of Program Readiness

  1. Technical colleges must evaluate students’ readiness for degree, diploma, and certificate programs. Technical colleges may accept a student’s official entrance score on the following validated assessment instruments if the scores meet the required minimums listed on the attachment 6.2.1p.a2.
    • SAT
    • ACT
    • PSAT
    • PACT
    • NEXT-GENERATION ACCUPLACER
    • Compass/Asset

    • HOPE GPA after completion of 10th grade of 2.6 or higher
    • Completion of GED® with a score of 145 or higher on each section for placement into any certificate, diploma, or degree program

*A student possessing an Associate’s degree or higher from an institutionally accredited institution shall be exempted from placement requirements.*

  2. Assessment results are transferable to any TCSG college. Each technical college will develop its own retesting policy and charges may apply.
  3. Official transcripts from a regionally or nationally accredited postsecondary institution recognized by the United States Department of Education documenting equivalent program-level English and math coursework successfully completed (C or better) may be used in lieu of placement exams.
  4. Subjective criteria such as, but not limited to, written or oral interviews, personality assessments, and letters of reference shall not be utilized as part of the evaluation for program readiness or admission to a college or a program. All criteria should be published and applied consistently to all applicants for a program.

Official transcripts, test scores, or other required documents must be sent directly from the issuing school or agency to the Admissions Office. If submitted by the applicant in person, documents must be in an unopened envelope that has been officially sealed by the issuing school or agency. Official documents and credentials submitted to the College for admission and placement purposes become the property of SCTC and will not be duplicated or transferred to another institution.

Students who wish to have prior college credit evaluated for transfer or intend on using a funding source that requires the evaluation of prior college credit, such as HOPE Scholarship or Veterans Educational Benefits, must submit all post-secondary transcripts along with their admission application.

COVID-19 Admissions Accommodations

If an applicant’s overall high school grade point average is 2.0 or higher they may exempt remedial course requirements for certificate, diploma, and degree programs through the 2024 Summer Semester.

Withdrawal of Application

An applicant who has been notified officially of acceptance should notify the Admissions Office if he or she decides not to attend. The applicant must submit an updated application for the semester he/she desires to attend. The applicant will be notified when to register.

Admissions Appeal

Applicants who feel they were unjustly denied admission to Southern Crescent Technical College may file an appeal. This appeals process also applies to currently enrolled diploma students who desire to transfer into a degree program. In the event that an applicant is denied admission and the applicant desires to appeal the admissions decision, the individual may complete the online Appeals Form or appeal in writing to the VPSA.

Testing Guidelines

For entrance purposes, some students will take the ACCUPLACER or COMPANION exam. The student will receive a testing form from Admissions before testing. Students will need to present a current photo identification. The exam consists of Reading, Writing, and Math (Arithmetic and Quantitative Reasoning, Algebra and Statistics). Students can access the built in calculator on specific questions of the Accuplacer test. The student will need to bring a pencil and the Testing Center will supply scratch paper. Food, beverages, hats, cell phones, Bluetooth devices, and personal items are not allowed in the Testing Center.

Any applicant who does not make test score requirements may retest in any area of deficiency. A retest can be taken the next calendar day. There will be a nonrefundable retest fee of $15.00 per retest.

  • First Retest: Applicant can retest the next calendar day.
  • Second Retest: Applicant can retest the next calendar day. Confidence Builder is strongly recommended prior to final attempt, but not required. (This tool provides additional practice in the deficient areas).

If the applicant does not earn the minimum program requirement scores, he/she will need to take the learning support course(s) associated with his/her scores. Learning Support classes are remedial classes taken to refresh a student’s skill in the specific subject area. Students cannot retest if they have begun a Learning Support course. Once a Learning Support course is completed satisfactorily with a grade of a C or above, the student can retest in that particular subject one time. If the required score is not met, the student must continue with the sequence of Learning Support classes.

A student may retest if a student changes his/her major from certificate/diploma to degree.

A student may retest if the student has not attended for one year (three consecutive semesters).
